How Do I Renew My Green Card?

Renewing Your Green Card in Paducah, KY

The U.S. immigration process can be complicated. Our law firm handles different immigration cases daily that involve permanent residency and citizenship, immigration petition, visa processing, consular processing, and other immigration processes. One common inquiry received by our Kentucky immigration attorneys, however, is related to green card applications.

Getting a green card takes time and effort, and aspiring immigrants sometimes even have to wait for months or years before they can finally become permanent residents in the U.S. It isn’t technically a one-time-only procedure, and it often requires the help of an immigration attorney.

What Is a Green Card?

A green card is issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Being a green card holder means that you have permanent residence status in the United States. This is valid for 10 years.

If you’re a permanent resident and your green card is about to expire, it is best to submit your green card renewal application form 6 months before its expiration date. Doing this will give USCIS ample time to process your application. Also, renewing an expired green card can lead to immigration problems.

Green card processing times may vary, but a green card status renewal usually takes about a year before your new green card is delivered to you.

How Do You Renew a Green Card?

To renew your green card status, you need to submit a Form I-90 at the USCIS office. You need to provide personal information such as:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Birthdate
  • Place of birth
  • Parents’ names
  • Alien Registration number
  • Social security
  • Reason for applying.

You also need to provide other information such as:

  • The city where you processed your immigrant visa or adjustment of status
  • The embassy or USCIS office where your visa was issued

If there have been any changes in your name, you must submit a legal document such as:

  • Marriage certificate
  • Court order
  • Adoption papers

What Is the Green Card Renewal Process?

You can submit the I-90 along with the other required documents through mail or online as instructed by USCIS.

To start the application process, there are also other fees that you have to pay such as application fees and biometrics. You will then receive a notice from the USCIS for your biometric appointment in your local USCIS office.

A US immigration officer will check your records, to verify if you have committed crimes or have become deportable from the United States.

In rare cases, USCIS officers may contact an applicant for an interview before making their final decision.

To avoid any trouble with your application, it is best to consult with an immigration lawyer. At Citizenship & Immigration Law Firm, we have experienced Kentucky immigration lawyers who can assist you.
